Local Economic Development
The Local Economic Development (LED) unit has a mandate to promote economic development; facilitate the creation of employment opportunities, facilitate the economic transformation, provide professional economic development services, provide key economic research and expert knowledge and economic intelligence to the O. R Tambo region and its municipalities. The LED Unit understands that these cannot be offered without strong partnerships, coordination, and cooperation with all relevant economic stakeholders.
Our approach is based on a participatory approach backed by strong research towards economic development and economic transformation. The LED Unit is pro-active to economic development challenges faced by the region due to external economic climate conditions affecting the region and the nation at large. The region has identified the following key sectors to advance economic growth in the region;
Retail & Trade
Transport & Communication
These sectors have huge potential for exploration to achieve the mandate of the unit and the district municipality as articulated in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
The Economic Development Unit (LED) is thus structured in the following components to deal with the challenges faced by the district and to explore opportunities presented by the region;
Enterprise Development (SMMEs, Cooperatives, Informal Traders)
Rural and Agricultural Development (Forestry, Marine/Aquaculture)
Trade and Investment Promotion
Research and Resource Mobilization.
