COMMUNITIES URGED TO BE ON HIGH ALERT DURING THE MTHATHA TAXI STRIKE

The O. R. Tambo District Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Mesuli Ngqondwana is calling for calm and safety during the current disturbances in and around Mthatha and some parts of the district.
This follows numerous road closures since the early hours of this morning (27 May) wherein Mthatha CBD is inaccessible.
Scores of minibus taxis have been observed blocking entrances on the R61 and N2 to Mthatha Central Business District (CBD).
The Executive Mayor says, of utmost concern is the safety of motorists, truck drivers, pedestrians and passengers who have been stuck for hours in the blockaded areas.
“Authorities are doing their best to facilitate a discussion aimed at resolving the matter without further harm to property and persons.” emphasised the Executive Mayor.
He added that he strongly condemns any violence or disruptions that are occurring during this time.
It is critical that our district remains a place of peace, safety, and stability.
“I implore all residents to exercise caution during this period and to be vigilant against any potential threats to their safety,” said the Executive Mayor.
Law enforcement agencies are dealing with the situation.
Issued by O.R. Tambo District Municipality.
