When a disaster strikes, you don’t get a second chance.
That is why today, the O.R. Tambo District Municipality Community Services, led by the Head of Department for Community Services, Mr Luyanda Madzidzela, brought together all critical responders for the Disaster Risk Management Advisory Forum and Festive Season Contingency Planning Session.
Because our District has learned the hard way.
On 10 June 2025, floods tore through communities, homes and infrastructure. Families watched their lives change in minutes. This engagement was not a meeting, it was a vow: that O.R. Tambo will never be caught unprepared again.
What the session Confronted :
✅ Building a stronger, sharper, faster disaster management strategy.
✅ Facing the real lessons and scars left by the June floods, so we rebuild smarter.
✅ Preparing for the festive season, a time of joy, but also heightened danger from heavy travel, unpredictable weather and crowded community activities.
✅ Strengthening our early warning systems so that danger is communicated before it becomes tragedy.
✅ Tightening preparedness, response, recovery and mitigation across every corner of the District.
This is what a caring, accountable municipality looks like , one that protects its people long before an emergency arrives.
